As of January 1, 2024, children under age 19 with Medicaid or Family Access to Medical Insurance Security (FAMIS) receive essential health care and preventive services for 12 continuous months, regardless of changes in circumstances.

Virginia Premier will become part of Optima Health as of July 1, 2023. If you have Virginia Premier as your Medicaid managed care health plan, you will receive information from Optima Health as your new managed care provider. This change will not impact your health benefits or coverage.

Please be aware that DMAS has been notified that Medicaid members in other states have received fraudulent text messages during the “return to normal enrollment” period that seek payment from the member to prevent the loss of their health insurance.

Public Notice from Maximus Health Services, Inc. (Maximus) on behalf of the Virginia Department of Medical Assistance Services (DMAS). DMAS is Virginia’s Medicaid agency, and Maximus contracts with DMAS to support Medicaid’s Operations. We are alerting you because on July 22, 2022, a Maximus employee emailed documents that contained the protected health information of some Medicaid members to a personal email account. Your information may have been included in one of the documents.

The continuous coverage requirement, which prevented state Medicaid agencies from reducing or ending Medicaid or FAMIS coverage regardless of changes in an individual’s circumstances, will end on March 31, 2023. DMAS will have 12 months to initiate eligibility determinations and renewals for the more than 2.1 million Virginians who currently have Medicaid or FAMIS coverage.

Cardinal Care is Virginia Medicaid's new name for all health coverage programs for all Medicaid members. This new name and brand began on January 1, 2023. The goal of Cardinal Care is to create a clearer, straighter path to care for all Medicaid members. 

For out-of-state providers, who are not enrolled with Florida Medicaid and who provided services to displaced Florida residents, Florida Medicaid has created a provisional provider enrollment process. Florida Medicaid has waived the requirements for providers to submit documentation showing the nature of the treatment, as well as other normally-required information, when applying for provisional enrollment.

Virginia Medicaid will soon return to our normal enrollment process for health care coverage, and we need your help to spread the word. All Medicaid members need to update their contact information so they continue to receive high quality health care coverage.
