Developmental Disability (DD) Waivers
Virginia Medicaid administers DD Waivers jointly with the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services. There is a waiting list for these waivers, and the slots are assigned based on urgency of need. To apply for DD Waiver services, contact your local Community Services Board (CSB) or visit the Virginia Community Services Board website to locate the CSB in your community.
Virginia has three waivers for individuals with a Developmental Disability:
- Building Independence is for adults 18 years and older who can live mostly independently. They do not need supports all the time. People with this waiver usually own, lease, or control their own living arrangements and supports are complemented by non-waiver-funded rent subsidies. - Family & Individual Support is available to both children and adults. People with this waiver may live with their family, friends, or in their own homes. Some people may need functional, behavioral, or medical supports. Family and Individual Supports (FIS) Waiver Fact Sheet 2018
- Community Living is available to both children and adults. People with this waiver usually require supports in their homes all the time. Some people may need to live in a home that has staff to support them with functional skills and/or complex medical and/or behavioral needs. Community Living (CL) Waiver Fact Sheet 2018
